Morning Sickness.......No Thanks!! During all of my pregnancies I have always experienced this so called 'morning sickness'. Why it is called this, I have no idea as it can be constant and completely debilitating. Especially when you are running around after little people who rule the world or whether you are in work........its just not easy. The nausea and sickness normally kick in around week 6, that's 2 weeks after your missed period and can last anywhere up to 14-20 weeks in pregnancy. This is not written in stone and as individual as we all are, our experiences will also be different. I will share a few things that have helped me along the way in hopes that it will help some of you lovely ladies. 1. Peppermint oil During my early pregnancy weeks I carry peppermint oil around with me and have a sniff when I'm feeling nauseous. I find that it does ease that sick feeling temporarily. My eldest son makes sure I don't leave the house without it. Is it because he cares or is it because he doesn't want his mam to be heaving anytime someone thinks of something that sounds somewhat similar to chicken and ruining his street cred every time we leave the house?? Its hard to know but I am very grateful all the same! 2. Water Water is super important for every system in your body and even more so when you are growing and carrying a little human. It is said that you should increase your water intake during pregnancy by 2-3 glasses. So how does water help with morning sickness?? Aren't mornings are hard enough with all that getting up and getting dressed without the rush to the bathroom to feel like you are going to expel your stomach through your mouth.......Its just not fun. Even if you feel you cant cope with ingesting anything, drinking water first thing will take the harshness away from the dry heaving and the emptying of your already empty stomach. It creates more of a flow and I find that it lessens the time spent bent over the toilet. 3.Chew, Chew, Chew When food becomes somewhat tolerable, your body will try to catch up and get that much needed energy that is essential to sustain all that is happening within you. You may feel quite blasé about food or you may want to hoover whatever you have in the presses because, you know, its been like 10 years since you have eaten but either way.....Chew,Chew,Chew. The last thing you want is for your food to come back up the way it went it! Be mindful when you are eating and chew until the food feels like liquid. It can feel like some effort just to chew food but you wont be sorry when you vomit liquid rather than a whole 5 course meal. Not to mention, the extra chewing will also aid in digestion and help with constipation. 4. GentleBirth App We have all heard how the awesome GentleBirth workshops, homestudy programme and the GenlteBirth App has helped thousands of families have hugely positive and calm birth experiences but wait......there is more. Absolutely!! No I am not talking about its pre-conception, cesarean section, positive induction or parenthood support element.......this is a post about morning (pffft!) sickness after all. There is a morning sickness track designed to help all of us mum's who suffer from this pregnancy symptom. I listened to it most nights and regretted the ones I missed. For me it did not stop my morning sickness completely but my mornings were smoother and my days were filled with less nausea.....I will take that gladly, thank you very much! And there we have it....... This too will pass......hopefully sooner rather than later. As I finish my 17th week of pregnancy, I can safely say that this is somewhat behind me and I am beginning to feel human again. I wish you ladies an easy and joyful pregnancy. -Maria
