There are many positive factors to birthing your baby at home; the main ones being you know who your midwife is (continuity of primary carer having developed a relationship of trust, and all of this backed up by research!! 
Secondly the nicest part giving birth in your own comfortable environment… your home. 
Homebirth has being proven to be a safe way to bring your baby in to the world, even safer than hospital and there are lots of research to support that. 
I always say that Birth is a journey, and despite our best plans sometimes ends up going in a different direction. 
Choosing a home birth does not always mean giving birth at home, but if you do transfer into the hospital for any reason, your community midwife will come with you and support you in the hospital. 
Your midwife will work with hospital staff to bring about the best possible birthing experience for you and your family. 

There are Self-employed community midwives (SECM’s) dotted around the country see www.communitymidwives.ie or look at Hse.ie/homebirth. 
There are  two midwives present at a homebirth. SECM;s work with the hospitals.
These SECM’s sub contract out to the HSE to provide the free HSE Home birth service. SECM'S are registered with NMBI, experienced and under the goveranace of the HSE.

If you would like to consider a homebirth always source your closest SECM first  (in the early stages of pregnancy) as SECM's book up very quickly; as there are only 20 across the island of Ireland. See again www.communitymidwives.ie to see who your closest SECM is.

There are Private midwives Ireland who can also facilitate homebirth. This can be expensive but some insurance policies cover homebirth, please check your individual policy.
